A Look Into the League, Part III

Continuing our look into each division, I will now discuss the AFC North division. The North has been a very competitive division this decade and I do not see that coming to an end in the near future.

The winners of the division and Super Bowl runner ups are the Pittsburg Steelers. With a quarterback looking to put his off the field troubles to rest and a running attack to give them balance this team looks to build on their past success. The defense is stout against the run, ranking 1st in rush yards allowed, but it is the pass defense that needs help. Their 12th ranked pass defense doesn't show the problems they have in their coverage game. Defensive player of the year Troy Polamalu showed the world his weakness all through the playoffs, biting on the run and letting balls go deep. Cornerbacks Ike Taylor and Bryant McFadden were also beat deep much through the playoffs and their inability to cover man-to-man hurt them against the spread offense of Green Bay. The offense is on the rise though I think they will soon have to be carried by them; can Big Ben handle the franchise on his shoulders?

The Baltimore Ravens, another offense on the rise, has great hopes for the next few years. This team will need to get it done soon because the great Baltimore defense which was 3rd in points allowed and 5th against the run will need more rest then in past years. The veteran defense is now becoming old and their ability to stop a team for no yards is coming to an end. This is why it is good to see quarterback Joe Flacco coming into his game and running back Ray Rice continue to expose defenses in the run and pass.

Veteran wide out Derrick Mason seems to get better with age and the exciting play of new receiver Anquan Boldin really seems to be filling the seats in Baltimore. A great coaching staff and a group of youngsters on offense is promising for this team; will they be able to beat the Steelers soon enough?
