the maximum loading for mezzanine flooring? The loadings for flooring are worked out using the British Standard load tables that are then compared against the usage for your floor. For storage the load is in bands, light use 4.8Kn/m2 (480kg per square metre) medium use 7.32Kn/m2 (732Kg per square metre) or for heavy usage 9.6Kn/m2 (960Kg per square metre). Should you have any questions you should speak to your flooring designer. Does flooring need to be approved by building regulations?

The flooring would need to be approved by building regulations. Your floor designer will normally take of this on your behalf, but might need to need submit floor slab details and plan of the building showing the fire exits. After you have submitted the details it normally takes about 48 hours for you get your approval. Will my flooring need planning permission? You may need it but only if your car park is shared with other buildings or it belongs to the council. How come some mezzanine floors need a fire rating and some other do not?

If your floor is going to exceed one of the following, then you will need to give the underside of the floor a 1 hour fire rating. 1. Your floor area will not exceed 400 meters square

2. The floor is not going use more than 50% of the space in the room its being fitted in.

3. You are not going to have more than 3 people on the floor at any one time.

4. You will not be using the floor for things other than storage, automated storage or maintenance.

Note that you may not need to have a fire rating if your going to extend the sprinkler system to the underside of the mezzanine flooring, but this can be very expensive to do. Any additional items I need to know?

A floor will need to have smoke detection, emergency lighting and fire exit signs, and so should make arrangements to contact local electrician. Your flooring company may also require the use of your forklift to unload and assist in installing the floor. Does my landlord need notification?

You need to inform your landlord and they will want to see drawings and expect it to comply with building regulations. What type of decking does my floor need?

An internal mezzanine will usually use 38mm thick high density flooring grade chipboard. A steel chequer plate would be used if there is a high risk of liquids permanently accumulate on the mezzanine flooring. An external mezzanine floor would use a open galvanised steel mesh or a galvanised steel chequer plate to stop rusting or rotting in the weather.
