A Monumental Tribute To Mother India At Varanasis Bharat Mata Temple

Built in 1936 by Ghandian devotee Babu Shiv Prasad Gupt

, the Bharat Mata Temple is a monumental testament to a diverse nation's unified identity as one India. Located in the Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth campus grounds, the premises also look over the sacred ghats of Varanasi with stunning views over the Ganges.

The concept of a shrine to celebrate Mother India came to Babu Shiv Prasad Gupt and his associate Shri Durga Prasad Khatri when they noticed Varanasi's illustrious repertoire of Hindu temples and mosques devoted to various religions and philosophies with their devotees belonging to equally diverse sections of the population. This motivated the Ghandian followers to build a temple in which Indians of all race, creed, culture and religion could worship one cause, regardless of faith. A temple that was free of gods, goddesses and religious figures but bound to its devotees as a symbol of national pride and patriotism for the country to which they all belonged.

Constructed in the shape of a pentagonal cone flanked by five pillars, the main highlight of a trip to the temple is of course viewing its marble relief map of the nation. Carved by skilled artisans, the map is a detailed depiction of India's varied regions with its primary oceans, rivers, plains and mountains displayed prominently. Visitors should also note that the marble map contains true-to-life proportions of the nation's topography with accurate depictions of longitudes and latitudes of its hills, waterways and landscapes. Precise in scale, the map is a marble wonder to all who behold its perfection, although the map presents an undivided India, as it was crafted before the Independence and India's subsequent division.

The five pillars on the main structure denote the basic elements which are instrumental in the creation of all life. Symbolizing fire, earth, sky, wind and water, the five columns meet at the summit of the building denoting the irrefutable fact that all elements ultimately bind together with a higher power.
