A trip to Germany is not to be missed. Here are some things to consider when planning a package holiday of that country.

First it helps to find some information about your destination. As we all know, Germany has had a long and colorful history, especially in the recent past. You can still see traces of the Berlin wall in the capital city. This wall, which was actually a barbed-wire fence through much of the country, separated the country into eastern and western sides after World War II. The country is still adjusting to unification and it is well worth visiting this landmark.

For a more picturesque look at Germany, visit the Black Forest. German folklore has many magical tales filled with witches, elves and spells. Be forewarned, many North Americans are disappointed to find that the Black Forest is much smaller today than others closer to home. You will still enjoy biking and hiking through this region. After you've worked off the calories, enjoy some Black Forest cake and other world-renowned German pastries.

If the Black Forest got you in a fairy tale mood, be sure to visit the Rhine Valley. You will be enchanted by the castles and cathedrals along the picturesque countryside. For the ultimate fairy tale, however, visit Neuschwanstein, the famous castle built by "Mad" King Ludwig of Bavaria. Another fairy-tale city to visit is the walled city of Rothenberg, which retains all its medieval charm.

When many people think of Germany, they think of beer. If you enjoy that beverage, you will want to visit Munich's Oktoberfest. This world-famous event started as a way for local farmers to celebrate a successful harvest. Today, the streets of Munich overflow with feasting and merriment.

Another event not to be missed is the Passion Play of Oberammergau. Every 10 years the people of this town present an impressive recreation of Jesus Christ's death. If a play takes 10 years to produce, you can be sure it is well worth seeing.

Because there is so much to see in Germany, you may not be able to squeeze everything into one trip. A package tour is the most efficient way to see Germany.
