A painter and decorator has much more responsibility in their job today. In the past they have been expected to much less than they do now as part of the job. Now they are responsible for a whole host of things, such as preparing the area that is to be painted, ensure valuable and pieces of furniture are properly covered so they don't get any paint splashes. Some painters will even be required to choose and buy the paint for a customer. Other duties could involve masking up areas of wall that are not to be painted. Painters and Decorators are now responsible for clearing away after they have completed a job, they will need to make sure that everything is as it was when they first started the job.

There are a number of people who choose to get their house decorated professionally, this can be due to a number of reasons, they don't feel they are competent enough to carry out the work themselves, they don't have the time to do the work and have the money to pay somebody else. This wont give you as much experience as a work based apprenticeship however you will be fully qualified at the end showing your competence at the subject. Again this will be a qualification that potential employers will value.

In painting and decorating there is plenty of room for career progression. Whether you work for a company or are starting up your own business there is always room for improvement. If you work hard and are employed by a large company then there is definitely room for improvement as you can quickly move up within the company.
