A Passport to Wonderland
England has a new tourist attraction. After the release of Walt Disney's live-action remake of Alice in Wonderland last year, fans are flocking to Antony House in Cornwall, the 18th century mansion used in the film.
Since the movie was released, the house has seen the number of visitors jump dramatically, from an average of 20,000 people a year to over 100,000. According to Emma Quan of the National Trust, which manages the property, during the Easter holidays of 2010 the house actually had to turn visitors away because there were so many.
The Antony House has capitalized on its role in the movie by designing an entire Wonderland-themed adventure for interested guests. The house's website invites visitors to "Be enchanted by a larger than life caterpillar, a clock and even Alice herself. Enter a beautiful oversized garden through a rabbit hole. Discover the giant chess pieces under the Cork Oak tree and the cunning Cheshire Cat in a fantastic yew cone."
They've also set up games in the garden, such as croquet (though without the live flamingos, unfortunately) and a life-sized chess board. You can also participate in a "Caucous race," which has no rules but does have a prize at the end. Finally, a bedroom inside the house has been made up to look like Alice's in the movie.
To visit the house, you have to purchase a ticket. The Antony House management tries to limit the number of people on the grounds at any given time, so there are a limited number of tickets available for any given day and they recommend you arrive early.
If you'd like to visit the Antony House as part of a visit to England, you'll need to get your travel documents in order first. Be sure to apply for your passport as far in advance as possible; it takes 6 weeks for normal processing and even the expedited option takes three weeks. However, if you discover at the last minute that your passport has gone through the looking-glass, you can save your trip by making an appointment at a regional passport agency office or using a private company like RushMyPassport for 24-hour service.
