A Pathway To Us Citizenship Through Eb-5 Immigration
If you and your family have an interest in becoming lawful permanent residents of the United States
, or even U.S. citizens, there is a very interesting opportunity available. The U.S. government formerly offered
EB5 visas only to immigrant investors who were able to start a new company in the U.S. The program has changed over the years and now offers
EB-5 immigration opportunities to those who can invest $1,000,000 in specific business ventures that already exist. The required investment is reduced to $500,000 if the investment is made in certain rural areas that have a particularly high rate of unemployment.
The updated program was due to end on September 30, 2012, but the U.S. Congress recently voted to extend it for three more years. Participation in the program had not been very high, probably due to the difficulty of completing the application process. Now the application and other requirements for EB5 visas have been simplified to some degree. There are also companies, made up of immigration consultants and lawyers, which are assisting many applicants with the process. As a result, the number of applications has significantly increased.
There are stipulations, other than the initial financial investment, that must be satisfied under the EB-5 immigration program. The investment must be in an approved business venture that either creates or preserves the jobs of ten U.S. workers. That number cannot include the investor or his immediate family. Under this program, the investor does not have to own or manage any business. The investor just makes the investment in a business in a Targeted Employment Area (TEA), and the business owners and managers do their jobs to make the business grow and create jobs for the surrounding area.
There is another type of business investment that can be made, which is called a Regional Center. According to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services website, "A Regional Center is defined as any economic entity, public or private, which is involved with the promotion of economic growth, improved regional productivity, job creation and increased domestic capital investment." These businesses must be approved by the USCIS, but they are not endorsed or backed financially by the U.S. government in any way. This type of investment expands the definition of the required ten jobs to include jobs within the Regional Center itself, plus jobs that are created or preserved indirectly within supporting businesses.
This program takes a sizeable financial investment, as well as the willingness to complete the detailed application process, but it is an opportunity for a foreign investor to take the first step toward U.S. citizenship. It provides a way to make an investment in a well-researched business that may produce a healthy return on the initial investment, as well as the benefits of living wherever you choose in the United States.
