In other words, whatever duties not covered by the pharmacy are under the purview of the technician.

Despite the mundane routine, it is imperative the technician maintains an organized work practice. A scatterbrain with tendencies to mislabel bottles may result in fatal consequences for unsuspecting patients and law suits for his employers. Pharmacy technicians are also responsible to upkeep the patients information for the sake of clinical records as well as insurance claims. In the event of arising queries, they are to seek clarification from their supervisors. Decisions to alter dosage or dispense medication lie in the hands of their superiors.

With sufficient training and years of experience, each has the opportunity to advance to a supervisory post culminating in the ultimate goal of being a licensed pharmacist. Some opt to enter specialized branches of medicine from the pharmaceutical sense. As computerized systems become more apparent and accepted by the medical community, pharmacy technicians contribute their knowledge in development efforts.
