A Quick Guide To Modern Television Technology

Sometimes keeping abreast of advances in technology can be difficult and the recent

rapid changes in television equipment have no doubt left some people feeling confused. Here is a quick guide to some of the new television-related terms you may have come across and what each one means.

HDTV high definition television produces a much higher resolution signal than a standard definition television. The signal can either be two megapixels per frame (1920 x 1080p) or one megapixel per frame (1280 x 720p). When you compare two megapixel HDTV with standard definition TV it has roughly five times as many pixels, making the image quality much sharper and more realistic. If you want to view HDTV at home then you will need to buy an HDTV.

Plasma television these TVs use a plasma of xenon and neon gas to emit visible ultra-violet light. The light is transformed into an image using red, blue and green phosphors to produce all the shades of the spectrum. Plasma TVs tend to be very large and offer good image contrast and viewing angles in a darkened room. They are ideal for use in conjunction with a home cinema system.

LCD television LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Diode. In these set, the tiny pixels which make up the picture on the screen are backlit with a fluorescent white light to display the image. LCD TVs are higher in resolution and often have reduced glare when viewed in daylight. An LCD TV has a lifespan of over 60,000 hours whereas a plasma TV will only last up to 60,000 hours before it dims by half.

LED television LED TVs are very similar to LCD TVs except that LED lighting is used instead of the fluorescent lighting. This gives LED TVs better contrast and black levels because they use local dimming. This also improves the viewing angles. LED TVs tend to consume the least power out of the three types, with plasma screens being the most energy intensive.

HD ready when the technology for high definition really took off there was a lot of confusion about which TVs allowed HDTV to be viewed. HD-ready TVs do not incorporate a tuner to decode HDTV signals and therefore require an additional device to do this. In 2005 certification for HDTV was introduced after many people were wrongly sold TVs they believed enabled them to watch HDTV.

Blu-ray disc Blu-ray is the new home movie format that allows you to watch films in high definition. A Blu-ray disc has a much greater capacity than a DVD so it can store the large 50GB files needed for a feature-length high definition film.

Blu-ray player in order to watch a Blu-ray disc you need a Blu-ray player. Blu-ray players use a blue-violet laser to read the discs that is far more precise than the traditional red laser found in DVD players. You can still view DVDs with a Blu-ray player.
