A Quick Primer On The Prevention Of The Dreaded Swimmer's Ear

An infection of the ear canal skin and of the outer ear

, Swimmer's ear is alternatively called otitis externa. It is unlike an infection of the inner ear, otitis media, which is generally suffered along with various cold symptoms such as congestion or a runny nose. Swimmer's ear can occur should water become trapped inside the ear canal subsequent to bathing or swimming. The infection is caused by irritation brought on by the presence of water inside the ear, leading to the growth of fungus or certain kinds of bacteria.

A swimmer's ear infection is just like any other infection of the skin that you might see from a scrape or other open-skin injury. No one else can catch this kind of infection. Ear drops can be purchased at the local pharmacy to combat swimmer's ear, or you can concoct a solution at home using rubbing alcohol and white vinegar in equal amounts. Once you are finished swimming, put between five and ten drops into your ears. Let the drops remain for a couple minutes, then let them leak out onto a Kleenex or other clean cloth.

The vinegar will destroy any harmful elements such as fungus or bacteria, and the rubbing alcohol will dry out the ears. These drops are only intended to help you avoid getting infection. If you already have one, these drops will not help. Prevention of swimmer's ear is also aided by drying one's ears completely after exposure to water, as well as avoiding water that may be polluted. Additionally, don't allow your child to insert anything into their own ears, including cotton swabs.

If your children are complaining of an itchy feeling near or inside the ear, hearing loss, pain around the ear canal or when you pull the ear back, or pain along the cheek area near the ear, then they probably have swimmer's ear. Sometimes when there is pain in only one ear it may indicate swimmer's ear.

Watch for any substance coming out of the ear which resembles pus. You should consult a doctor immediately if you suspect you or your child has swimmer's ear, particularly if you noticed a pus-like substance around the ear. Left untreated, this type of affliction has a small chance to turn into something much more serious and dangerous. A pain reliever is one way to ease the pain. Applying a warm cloth or heating pad may also be beneficial.

In some cases, specialized ear drops containing antibiotic-steroids may be prescribed by your doctor in order to lessen swelling. The fungus or bacteria will be killed by the antibiotic and the irritated skin of the ear will be treated by the steroids. Should the ear canal be particularly swollen, the doctor likely will insert a wick, or a bit of cotton or sponge which will make certain that the medicine will be able to reach as deeply into the canal as possible. The drops are generally used for somewhere between five to ten days and the child must not go swimming or get any water in the ear during the treatment.

If your little one still has pus coming out of the ear, relentless fever, hurting ears that do not improve after 48 hours, a stiffened neck, or dizziness, then you should contact your doctor right away, and do not neglect to see your pediatrician post treatment regardless.
