Once you've found a quality company that is offering car hire at affordable prices, you then need to have a look at what vehicles they have on offer and ensure that there's one that's suitable for your needs.
What you have to remember is that irrelevant of what car you drive at home, when you're looking to hire a car in a part of Portugal's Faro region you need to be looking at what car would be suitable at that moment.
Of course, something as small as a Smart ForTwo may not be suitable if you're particularly tall, but it may not be a necessity to go for a large 4x4 if there are only two people going to be using the car.
Further to looking at the cars that are available and deciding on one, you need to inspect everything.
Start with the paperwork that you'll be handed and look through it all to see if there are any points in the small print that you need to be aware of. Most agreements follow the same guidelines and simply put, you'll incur charges if you bring the car back later than stated or return it damaged. You then need to move onto the car itself and give it a good look over, both inside and out. This isn't for the fact you want the car to be in the best condition possible - remember, you're only hiring, not buying - but to make sure both you and the hire company are aware of any damage.
If you return the car and a seat is stained or a bumper is dented, if the hire company believed the car was in a good condition before they hired it to you, you could be held liable for the damage, regardless of whether you caused it or not.
And from then on - assuming you're fully insured - all you have to do is be careful. Get a map, pay attention to the road and other drivers and head off, at your own pace, to explore arguably the best part of Portugal.
