The recession has caused many job seekers to lose hope. Getting a new, professional resume and a professional cover letter can instill energy into a stalled job search, said Freiberger. "Keeping your morale high is crucial. If you feel better about your job search process, you will be more active and accomplish more. It will help you find a job sooner."

For those out of work, the holidays can be especially difficult. They may lack the funds to buy gifts and they may even sacrifice their own investment, as in a resume, in order to get presents for others.
