For several hundred years, going to the dentist meant that you would be getting teeth pulled - not saved. If a tooth was infected it would be pulled; there was no other type of solution at the time.

A tooth that has extensive decay will need a root canal in order to stop the infection from spreading. The dentist will remove all of the decay and dead nerve during the procedure. Removing the infected pulp is something that must be done with extreme care. To access the pulp chamber, your dentist will need to drill an access hole into the tooth. After the infected pulp is removed, your dentist will insert an antibacterial medicine into the pulp chamber. The medicine must remain there for several days to ensure the bacteria are dead.

When the tooth is finally clear of bacteria, the dentist will fill the branches of the root canal and the pulp chamber with a rubber like substance. He will then seal the access point with antibacterial cement, permanently blocking bacteria from reentering the tooth. The top will then be capped with a protective crown made of porcelain or metal. After the crown is installed, the function of the tooth will be restored within a few days.

Some people may be fearful of the pain associated with a root canal procedure. However, modern root canals result in very little pain to the patient. With the advances in technology and in anesthetics, dental patients should no longer fear a root canal procedure. After the surgery is complete, any discomfort or aches can be relieved with aspirin or acetaminophen. Fear of pain is no reason to shy away from having the procedure cause chances are you will experience very little discomfort and the recovery period is relatively short.
