Many societies and casual golfers play golf throughout the UK each year but the real hidden gem in golf is the county of Monmouthshire located in South Wales close to the English Border.
Monmouthshire boasts many golf courses which vary in challenge and beauty. It is also the home county for The Ryder Cup in 2010. There is no golf course which offers such beauty and challenge as Monmouth Golf Club. Located on the outskirts of the historic market town of Monmouth it can be got to by a beautiful country lane which takes you up and above the town itself out into the countryside. This is definitely where the stunning views start to shine.
Once there you will receive a warm welcome from the club Professional and club secretary who will make sure that your day is one to remember.
After taking in a bite to eat and warming up on the practice putting green you will take a pleasant short walk to the first tee where it all begins. The first hole itself is a short par four which doglegs slightly to the right up a slight incline, this means that the green is hidden from sight on the tee shot. Once you get to the green just take a panoramic look around you to take in the beautiful sights, from here you can pretty much see the scenery of the two surrounding counties, namely Gloucestershire and Herefordshire.
Monmouth Golf Club is not long is length but it is an undulating golf course offering some very stern challenges. It really isn't the type of golf course where your driver should be taken out without thought; it is truly a thinker's golf course.
If you carefully plan your way around the golf course you will be rewarded with approach shots and putts from the correct places which will ensure the lowest possible score.
The one thing that Monmouth Golf Club boasts is some of the best par three holes in the country. Again not long in length but with strategically placed bunkers and water hazards to punish errant shots. If you safely negotiate these tricky par threes you will be on for a good round of golf no matter what your standard.
If you are looking for somewhere to play this summer, whether you are an individual or society group then taking a trip to the county of Monmouthshire is a good idea, you will be rewarded with a warm welcome, challenging golf courses and scenery so beautiful you will be asking yourself why you didn't visit sooner.
