A Roundup Of Acne Skin Products

It can be a confusing experience trying to choose the best one out of the many competing acne skin products available today. Every person is different and some patients will do much better using a particular product than they will with another. It is simply not possible to predict in advance which acne skin product will be most effective.

First of all, we think that it is well worth talking to your pharmacist, health practitioner or dermatologist. These people are well-placed to offer expert advice and can save you from a lot of frustration and wasted time and expense. The advice given may well be to try those medications which have the best proven track record first.

Commence acne treatment as soon as possible. If the outbreak is left untreated then it is more likely to result in scarring or significant facial disfigurement. There are two main types of acne skin products. The first type accounts for the proven conventional pharmacological medications and the second classification relates to alternative or home remedies.

Conventional Medicine

Science-based medicine usually wins where acne treatment is concerned. The most effect acne skin products, those which are applied topically directly to the affected skin, are lotions or creams sold over-the-counter and containing the active ingredient benzoyl peroxide. A range of concentrations is available, although research indicates that they are all effective to much the same degree. However, the lower concentrations tend to have less severe side effects and these should be tried first. Benzoyl peroxide is an anti-inflammatory product which also has an anti-bacterial effect and reduces sebum production, making it one of the best acne skin products. Skin irritation and dryness are sometimes seen as side effects.

Effective acne skin products contain retinoids which are based on vitamin A. Vitamin A helps reduce acne symptoms by slowing down the production of sebaceous oil. Again, these are used topically. This means simply that they are applied to the skin.

Retinoid treatments include products such as Retinol, Tretinoin and Adapalene. Retinoids also have a useful anti-bacterial action. The main drawback is that severe skin irritation that may occur. Retinoids should never be used by pregnant women or nursing mothers.

As an alternative, acne skin products based on azelaic acid are quite effective in cases of mild to moderate acne. Azelaic acid products include Acnederm, Azelex and Finacea. They are usually dispensed in cream form with 20% concentration. These acne skin products are less irritating than retinoids although a significant side effect is reduction in skin pigmentation. This may make these products unsuitable for dark-skinned users.

Alternative Medicine

Many natural products have been proposed as acne treatments over the years. They remain very popular despite the complete lack of any reliable clinical evidence in support of their effectiveness. These alternative preparations have few if any side effects, unlike many conventional pharmaceutical products. Of course in many cases alternative or herbal products have no side effects simply because they have no effects at all!

Many different natural ingredients have been used in acne skin products. These include mint oil, orange and lemon derivatives and olive oil. There are simply hundreds of competing recipes and regimens so it is not possible to include them all here. Lots of them are available on the web. Consult a pharmacist or health practitioner for advice before deciding which ones are most worthy of your attention.

Unsurprisingly, various commercial herbal acne skin products are available over-the-counter and online. Again, these are entirely unsupported by any reliable clinical evidence although some users do attest anecdotally in support of their effectiveness. It can be very difficult to ascertain which alternative acne skin products are likely to be worth trying. Our advice is to avoid the most expensive ones. They are no more likely to help than the less costly formulations.
