A School Visit To The Planetarium
I can still feel the excitement of the day when the entire class was taken on a trip to the Planetarium
. The moment it was announced that the class would be taken to the Planetarium, the entire class started planning on what they would dress in and what they would do after going there. Nothing can be better than the school days. Now when I visit such places I dont get the same excitement. Thats perhaps because I have grown older. But I would say that was the best trip I had ever had in all the years of my growing up. I had a very deep interest in astronomy and going to the Planetarium was the closest to my dreams coming true.
The Planetarium is basically a theatre built for educating and entertaining the people with shows about the night sky and other aspects of astronomy. One can take view of the entire solar system. These can be created by using a wide variety of technologies such as the laser, fulldome projector, slide projector, etc. these facilities are also available in Science centers. But in most of the metro cities, these types of shows are usually exhibited in halls specifically meant for this purpose.
Archimedes started the concept of a planetarium which showed a mock version of the sun, moon and the other planets,. The detection of the Antikythera mechanism proved that such devices already existed during antiquity. Eise Eisinga in 1781 built the first planetarium in his living room in a Dutch town, Franeker. Oskarvon Miller worked with Franz Meyer, chief engineer at the Carl Zeiss optical works in Jena for the ever constructed largest planetarium which is capable of displaying both heliocentric and geocentric motion. Von Miller was also engaged with the work of Zeiss factory with German astronomer Max Wolf while this was being constructed.
After World War II, Germany was divided into two parts: East Germany and West Germany. In 1954, West German started making large planetariums and East German started building the small ones. The planetarium that projected the planet Uranus for the first time was the Boston Museum of Science built by the Korkosz brothers. Uranus being at best marginally visible to the naked eyes is ignored by most of the Planetariums.
In the 1960s Japan also started building planetariums. Goto and Minolta successfully marketed a number of different models. Goto got his success when the Japanese Ministry of Education introduced their smallest models, E-3 or E-5 in each of the elementary schools of the country. Former lecturer at New York Citys Hayden Planetarium, Philip Stern made his Apollo model which was introduced in 1967 with film strip, a plastic programme board and recorded lecture. Later, Stern became the head of Viewlex, the planetarium division which was a mid-size audio-visual firm located on Long Island.
Though we were taken to the Delhi Planetarium, we had to sit for a test before visiting the Planetarium. Thanks, to my teachers who provided us so many books on astronomy, so my performance was good both before and after the test.
