A Sharpening Technique in Photoshop

I'm not sure if I go against the grain with the way I like to sharpen my photographs, but when it comes to post processing my technique for sharpening my images doesn't use the usual un-sharp mask or sharpening tools available in Photoshop.

Instead I have found (well I was once told, a few years ago) that one of the simplest, and most effective ways to sharpen an image in Photoshop (I do not know if this would work in other software I am afraid, sorry) is to use the high pass tool.

I simply create a new layer {Ctrl+J} and select the High pass filter {Filter > Other > High Pass}, I then set this to about 5.0 (altering this so that areas you want sharpest appear as a line on the grey image), I then select OK. What you see will be a grey picture with a faint (halo like) image of the picture below, don't worry there is more to come. Once you have achieved a crisp looking line image, on the layers tab select to set this new (high pass) layer to overlay, soft light or hard light, depending on which you feel gives the sharpest results for your image.

Once this layer has been overlaid you will then find you have sharpened only areas that were already in focus, leaving background areas much softer, you can see the result by clicking the eye symbol by the top layer.

This method for sharpening photographs in the post processing stage of your photograph, also allows for more selective sharpening. As this is all done on a new layer, you can bring layer masks into effect, and remove areas that are sharp enough, or create second layers to add emphasis to sharpening in selective sections.

As all this is being done on new (copied) layers there is no risk to your original photograph (it is basically a non-destructive sharpening method), if you find what you have done has altered the image in a way you do not like simply delete the layer and start again.
