1896-1903: 1896 - Henry Ford, at age 33, creates his first ever vehicle - the Ford Quadracycle - which was a relatively basic design of a buggy frame with 4 bicycle wheels. In 1898, Ford creates the Detroit Automobile Company, however this was liquidated in the next two years. Ford also wins a high-profile race in 1901 and following this the Henry Ford Company is incorporated but in the next year, it was discontinued. Consequently, in 1903, Ford Motor Company is created fully.
1906-1919: In 1906, Ford becomes the top selling brand of the US with a total of approximately 8,700 cars produced. In the subsequent three years, Ford Motor Company England, otherwise known as Ford Britain, is created and aims to target the UK market. After two years, Ford also creates a factory in Manchester to facilitate quicker production of vehicles. In 1919, son of Henry Ford, Ensel, takes over as president of the firm.
1929-1945: Boasting an annual production peak of 1.5 million in 1929, Ford is seen taking the production crown and dominating the market, confidently knocking Chevy off the top spot. Later, in 1941, Ford design a general purpose jeep specially designed for military use and the trademark pressed metal grille that Ford designed is still used today. Two years later, Edsel Ford sadly dies of cancer, after which his father, Henry, resumes his position as president, for the following two years, until his grandson Henry Ford II takes over in 1945.
1947-1989: Following the death of his grandfather, Henry Ford, in 1947, Henry Ford II takes over as chairman. In 1957, Ford launches an Edsel brand of automobiles, increases production of Ford vehicles to 1.68 million. Three years later, Robert McNamara is appointed President of Ford, as well as Secretary of Defense. To further market prominence, Ford also set up Ford of Europe in 1967. Ford acquires 25% in Mazda in 1977, as well as Aston Martin Lagonda and Hertz Rent-a-Car ten years later in 1987. Ford also acquire Jaguar in 1989.
1999-2010: Ford acquire Volvo car division as Bill Ford, son of Henry Ford, becomes Chairman of the Board in 1999. The following year BMW sell Land Rover brand to Ford in 2000. Ford closes unprofitable factories in 2006 as part of a restructuring program and Alan Mulally is also elected president and CEO. In 2007, Ford report significant losses but remain optimistic and in the next two years sell Aston Martin, Jaguar and Land Rover. Despite this, leasing a Ford Kuga is a markedly popular choice on the leasing market.
If this restructuring program is handled competently, it would appear likely that the firm will soon regain the market dominance and profits it once had; however, whatever happens, it is clear that this is one of the most important vehicle brands that has gained a rightful place in vehicular history.
