A Short Guide To Loneliness Movies

Loneliness movies are definitely here to stay

, and the constant stream of such cinematic offerings means that there is never going to be a shortage of movies that explore the depths of human loneliness in all its tragic glory. No matter what type of movie you may be interested in, there is a good chance that some of them will contain loneliness as a dominant theme to some degree.

Why the rabid interest in loneliness movies? Don't we get enough loneliness in our lives already? This question is best answered by taking a look at the key aspects of loneliness. For people that are struggling with loneliness, there is often an unfulfilled yearning to belong or fit into a crowd. Unfortunately, the difficulty in conforming to society's norms has made loneliness one of the most prevalent of all human conditions. Many of us therefore choose to live vicariously through others, instead of having to face the formidable challenge of dealing with loneliness on our own. When we watch loneliness movies, we can therefore find out what it is like to be lonely and yet have some control over it.

With that being said, here are a few loneliness movies that have managed to become classics in their own right...or may soon be.

The Road is a tragic yet ultimately uplifting tale about a man and his son who are struggling to survive in a harsh post-apocalyptic world. Starring Viggo Mortensen, The Road is unrelentingly bleak throughout much of the proceedings, and the brutal environment, the overwhelming sense of despair, and the constant loneliness are broken only by occasional pleasures and simple joys that the two share on the way. Some of the scenes in the movie can get pretty depressing to be sure, so this might not be the best choice in loneliness movies if you are already severely depressed. Nevertheless, the few touching moments shared by the father and son and the satisfying conclusion makes this a powerful addition to any collection of loneliness movies.

Taxi Driver is one of the few loneliness movies that succeed on a cinematic level as well. Starring Robert DeNiro as a mentally unstable cab driver named Travis Bickle, the movie is a harsh cinematic depiction of a Vietnam veterinarian falling into the pits of madness, despair, paranoia and loneliness. DeNiro really brings the character of Travis to life in this gritty and tragic masterpiece, and the garish backdrop of the New York City streets at night serve as the perfect setting for this study into the various aspects of mental destabilization.

An unlikely tale of loneliness and alienation from eccentric director Tim Burton, Edward Scissorhands is one of the few loneliness movies that get better with every viewing. Although loneliness is definitely one of the main driving themes of the movie, human avarice, deception, greed, and envy are explored in satisfying detail as well. A quirky and heartwarming story that holds up to repeated viewing, Edward Scissorhands is a must-see for fans of loneliness movies that take a different approach.
