. China, Japan and Egypt are thought to have practiced the art of reflexology thousands of years ago. There are inscriptions found in tombs that show people performing reflexology on each other.

Reflexology is considered to be an alternative therapy although it was practised as a main form of treatment in some areas until the introduction of surgery and medicine.

How it works is that each part of the foot is related to a part of the body, when this part of the foot is massaged it can promote healing in the associated body part. It is thought to be similar to acupuncture as it stimulates the flow of chi energy around the body. Chi energy is the life force that travels around the meridians meridian lines being the invisible channels. When chi is flowing along meridian lines that are clear of blockages it is thought that your body will be in good health.

When parts of the foot are massaged and pressure is applied to them including the ankles it stimulates the lymphatic system restoring the correct chemical balance. Each part of the body has a place on the foot that relates to it.

Reflexology can be used on any age group; it is a great way to support other medicinal treatments or simply to treat minor ailments and to help patients relax. Some people may be worried that reflexology tickles feet however this is not the case as the amount of pressure applied is firm.

Babies who suffer from constipation may cry a lot and find it hard to settle down there is a part of the foot around the heel that relates to the colon when pressed it can help to get things moving for the baby.

In a part of the foot that relates to the lungs it can feel grainy if the person smokes or has a cold. Respiratory conditions are often relieved with reflexology as the energy paths are cleared leading to a decongestive effect.

Reflexology plays its part with fertility and menstruation by directing the flow of energy and causing the body to be balanced. Many women have managed to conceive babies after using reflexology; we are not entirely sure how it works as not enough studies have been carried out. Because of the deep relaxation that reflexology induces perhaps this is how our bodies find reflexology so favourable.
