A Short History Of Grenada

If you travel to Grenada on holiday, you may want to find out some more about the

history of this island nation when you stay in a luxury hotel like the Calabash. Grenada has a fascinating history, so here is a quick guide.

European Discovery

It is interesting to find out about the early days of the region when you stay in a hotel like the Calabash. Grenada is a country that can date its modern history back to 1498, when it was first seen by Christopher Columbus as he travelled across the ocean in search of the New World.

However, it was not until 1609 that the European powers first tried to settle on the main island. The British tried to settle here that year, but they failed, and it was not until four decades later, in 1649, that the French finally started a colony. This led to conflict with locals and was a very unsettled period.

Trading Hands

In 1762, the British captured Grenada during the Seven Years War, and so began a short period of British rule. It was not to last, however, because during the American War of Independence the French retook the island. This did not last long either, however, and power was restored to Britain in 1783.

The Beginning of the Nutmeg Trade

In 1842 the first samples of nutmeg were introduced to the islands, brought by a ship travelling from the East Indies to Britain that left a few trees there. The trees were planted, and the nutmeg industry was born. Now 40 percent of the worlds nutmeg comes from Grenada.

Troubled Modern Times

The more recent history is also interesting to find out about when you stay in one of the hotels here like the Calabash. Grenada experienced a very troubled history from 1950 onwards, even though now it is very peaceful.

In 1983, the government suffered a coup and demonstrations erupted across the country. The Prime Minister was released, but when he tried to retake power he was executed and a military government was formed. The USA then became nervous due to the construction of a huge airstrip on the island by Cuban workers, and it was worried that the communist regime would use it for military purposes. It invaded the island group in a move that was widely condemned across the world. However, order was restored and the US troops left in 1984. Democratic elections were then held, and since then the region has been relatively peaceful, allowing its tourist industry to thrive.
