A Short History Of Radio And Telephone

Radio and telephone are often scientifically and technically linked to each other

. Telephone came after radio with the advancement in technology. Radio is one way transmission while telephone is two way transmissions.

People usually think that radio is only limited to the use of radio stations that broadcast an announcer speaking and playing music but radio waves are also used for sending and receiving data such as satellite broadcasts.

The creation of radio started in the mid 1800s with the theoretical discussions of electricity and magnetism being related to each other. The first wireless experiments were carried out by James Maxwell. Other scientists who contributed to the development of radio were William Henry Ward, Mahlon Loomis, Thomas Edison and Marconi. A number of audio broadcasts were also transmitted. Commercial broadcasting increased with radio stations opening in every major city of US and in major capitals around Europe.

The 1920s truly were the birth years of modern radio, the mass development of radios made it possible for almost every home to own a radio that took pride of place in the family living room and around which the entire family would gather every evening.

When telephone was invented, It was amazing to believe the basic change a single invention brought to the world. The telephone was a blessing to talk to loved ones or business colleagues at any distances from the comfort of ones home without any hard effort. Because of the modern invention of mobile phones and internet facility the primary shift to the society that was caused because of the invention of the telephone is less considered.

The demerit of the early telephone exchanges was that they were locally based which allowed a user to only talk to another user on their own exchange by asking an operator to connect the call and if calls to other local exchanges were required the operator would link with the next operator in a sequence to connect the call.

The actual telephone device which is used in homes underwent major developments in the 1920s with the incorporation of a handset including both the earpiece and microphone, This was the first time for the users to talk while moving, sitting, or standing than rather remaining in a fixed single position with their ear pressed against the earpiece which was itself part of the base unit.

Large scale consumer uptake of mobile phones started in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Although by 2005, mobile phone connections in developed nations had outstripped the number of fixed line connections.
