A Short History Of The Orangery
The orangery was once a place to store exotic plants that might otherwise perish during the cold British winter
. They were frequently found in the grounds of fashionable residences between the 17th and 19th centuries.
Similar in style to a modern day greenhouse or conservatory, orangeries took their name from the orange tree as it was this particular type of shrub that was at most risk of perishing under cold wintry conditions.
The orangery originated from the Renaissance gardens of Italy. Glass making technology in this country enabled large panes of glass to be easily manufactured. The dutch developed the design and many orangeries there featured wooden roofs. It wasn't until the 19th century that they began to feature glass tops, which allowed even more light to pour in on plants that were not laying dormant.
The earliest versions were not as well thought out, or as ornate as later iterations. Many had no heating and during the cold nights, fires had to be lit inside in order to keep temperatures above freezing. Today, modern technology, such as the Celcius glass range (installed by companies such as Britelite Bespoke) means outside temperatures are no longer a problem. The glass keeps warmth inside during colder months and locks the heat out during the summer.
These recent advances in technology make orangeries a stylish alternative to conservatories. More and more people are turning to the wooden structure as an extension to their property in favour of purchasing a pvc-clad conservatory.
Some of the world's most beautiful structures include the orangery in Kuskovo, Moscow, which dates back to the late 18th century; the striking yellow building in Dusseldorf-Benrath and The Orangerie of the Royal Castle of Laeken in Belgium.
Next time you are thinking about adding an extension to your property and you want something with a little more class, try an Orangery.
