Fireplaces may seem like a typical feature within a typical winter home, but for engineers and architects into architectural design, a fireplace serves much more than just being a place for warming up. Architecturally, a fireplace is a structure that is designed to contain a fire. The fireplace has been conventionally used nowadays as a mode of getting warm especially during the winter. But during earlier times, fireplaces have been used for cooking food as well.

The fire we often see burning up in the fireplace is usually housed within a firebox. And the smoke and other particulate debris and exhaust that the flame produces is usually directed upwards through a chimney. Chimneys often build up with soot, that homeowners with fireplaces will find it necessary to have the chimneys cleaned regularly.

Before, fireplaces hold a central position within most homes as it is essentially put inside the living room of every house. And that tradition of putting fireplaces in the living room still exists today, but there are a number of radical designers who are reconstructing and redesigning fireplaces to fit interior design needs and preferences. Fireplace mantles are usually the ones that get modified to suit a specific interior design motif. And so, fireplaces aren't necessarily constricted to living rooms any more.

Besides providing ample warmth and a suitable place for cooking meals, fireplaces also offer a kind of delight with its wonderful array of sparks and dazzling flames, as well as the crackling sounds that may offer a feeling of ease and comfort for home dwellers.
