The story about Oliver Peoples dated back to the year 1986 when the opticians Dennis
and Larry Leight purchased an estate collection of the vintage American-made eyeglasses. The collections were with high-qualified, authentic, unworn vintage frames, with original packing and were all in mint condition. In fact, they were produced by the iconic eyeglasses companies that time, including Bausch & Lamb, American Optical. The collections sold well, and were a goldmine for the Leight brothers. The wide popularity of the eyewear inspired the brothers to design some authentic, fashionable, and desirable collection of
classic eyewear. They purchased a set of
retro-styled eyeglasses at a price of 7000 dollars which was said to be the possession of Oliver Peoples.
In 1987, Oliver People created its own brand, Oliver Peoples eyewear. The debut at Vision Expo East in NYC represented the vintage-inspired fashion direction of Oliver People, which was far away from the futuristic styles and geometric shapes dominant at that time.
Larrys designing gift and excellent marketing idea promoted the Oliver Peoples brand to the top fashion stage and completely influenced the direction of the eyewear fashion. Featured stories and fashion editorial highlighting Oliver Peoples began to appear on the top fashion magazines all over the world.
