A Study On Milk Allergy
Infants behave grumpy at times
Infants behave grumpy at times. But most of them exhibit grumpiness when are intolerant to cows milk.Milk allergy is the commonest of all infant allergies. Allergy to milk is common even among adults but it is primarily infants and kids who are affected. Cows milk is the predominant source causing allergy but sometimes even sheeps milk, goats and buffalos milk can induce allergy. Milk allergies are treatable and children who do not outgrow the allergy should follow a dairy free diet all through their lives. Very rarely milk allergy causes a severe hypersensitivity reaction called anaphylaxis.
The protein component in cows milk is the allergen that brings about the allergy. The protein is passed on to the child through mothers milk or through a commercial milk product. The immune system mistakes the milk protein to be an anti-body element and tries eliminating the protein. This causes the allergy reaction and the subsequent grumpiness in kids. Even protein present in soy milk can bring about an allergy. Most children outgrow milk allergy by the age 3 at the maximum by the age 5 but some do not outgrow the allergy for life. Studies indicate that this could be due to genes.
Milk allergy symptoms differ from one person to another. The allergy occurs within after consuming milk or even few hours later. The allergy affects the skin, gastrointestinal tract and respiratory tract.Immediate allergy reactions include vomiting, wheezing and hives. Allergies that require time to react include diarrhea, constipation, abdominal cramps, stool with blood and skin rash to name a few.The above mentioned symptoms are common in occurrence. Anaphylaxis occurs is a rare occurrence which includes swelling of mouth, compression of the airways resulting in respiratory problems and drastic blood pressure drop. This case requires immediate medical assistance. In case a child is being suspected for an allergy reaction it is advisable to call on the doctor and arrange for a diagnosis.
Apart from blood test, a skin allergy test is also conducted. This is done by injecting small amount of milk protein under a childs skin. The positive sign is indicated by the appearance of raised mark commonly called as wheal. The other test conducted is the oral test. A child is allowed to consume some amount of milk at the doctors presence and is let to wait for few hours. This is done just for a confirmation.
Prevention of milk allergy begins from breast feeding. If the baby born is found to exhibit allergy reactions then lactating mothers should follow a dairy free diet and consult a doctor for calcium alternate like fruit juices, spinach, sesame seeds and tofu. Amino acid based formula for children contains proteins in simple form facilitating easy digestion in kids. Kids can also be given hydro lysate or soy based formulas. When buying baby food, check for the package label whether the product contains milk or milk based ingredients. Ensure a well-balanced diet is followed for a healthy lifestyle and well being.
