A Taste Of Domains: Getting Registered Millions For Free

These methods were known as domain kiting and domain tasting

. If you register a domain name and delete it multiple times during the grace period, you will end up essentially owning it without having to pay for it. You can register bunches of domains and try them out during the five day grace period to see which ones you want to keep. This is called domain tasting. The registrant makes the decision about the ones to keep, and gets rid of the remaining ones and doesn't pay for any other registered domains that were previously authorized.

ICANN altered the policy and fee structure around August of 2008 to eliminate those schemes. To put an end to this, Google made the announcement that they would no longer place ads on domain names that were less than five days old. Domain kiters used to use Google AdSense to make money; however, since the Google ban and the ICANN fees, this practice has come to a screeching halt. However, the fees have only caused a small inconvenience for big time domain tasters.

Because of the large amount of registered domain names, the price for deleting domains during the grace period is cheap when considering the whole price. For this reason, domain tasting can be a profitable practice. The fees just eliminate the small players. The large organizations can still profit from registering hundreds or thousands of domains and never paying for them. They just keep the ones they can make money on by using alternatives for Google Adsense. Some of these are Adbrite and other advertising agencies that are willing to accept the ad views. In the United Kingdom, Nominet introduced new rules and regulations. These threatened to end contracts with registrars who persisted in the practice. Because of this, domain tasting by using domain names that one does not pay for isn't nearly the massive problem it used to be.

Even though one can still make some money with domain tasting tactics, a Message Labs report dated September 2009 shows that most people don't do this anymore. This report speculates that the days of domain tasting are over. That's overstating the matter, however. True, there doesn't seem to be much growth in the market for practices of this nature, but this phenomenon still occurs. Nonetheless, for international domains that are governed by ICANN, domain tasting remains a profitable tactic if it is used properly. It should be watched closely, because one can still make a profit from it if one does it on a large enough scale.

These maneuvers were known as domain kiting and domain tasting. To put an end to this, Google made the announcement that they would no longer place ads on domain names that were less than five days old. The end of domain tasting is discussed in this report. That is not quite completely correct.
