Taking a Road Trip down at Zaanse Schans
Taking a Road Trip down at Zaanse Schans
For those looking for some old world charm which shows many interesting parts of Dutch History, Zaanse Schans is the way to go, just 20 minutes away from Amsterdam proper. There are so many details in this town that show remnants of it as an old 17th century industrial village from the clog workshop, the still working windmills which allow visitors in on selected days and the cheese factory. The cheese factory is a great place to go to as it gives out a quiet tour of how cheeses are made and even distributes samples for tourists. One can either bike going to Zaanse Schans or take the train to Koog Zaandjik and then walking about 10 minutes going to the museum village. The village is meant to be a day trip however if you want to stay overnight, theres the Hotel Sans Pareil available for you. The Museum Zaans is another must-visit as it encapsulates the history of the whole village from its factories to its local customs.
Checking out the Different Eating Places in Amsterdam
Most of the dining stops in Amsterdam are famous for their cozy atmosphere, warm setting and relaxed manner more than just the culinary delights they offer. Most of the eating areas in Amsterdam are meant more to be great hangout places rather than just places to dine in, where one is allowed to just pine the day away with family or friends. Take Bistro Sante at Regio, for example, an ideal restaurant for those who like big portions. Theres also Caf aad de Wolf at Purmerend which has been in the neighborhood for over 40 years and is suitable for the much older crowd, turning into a bar at night. At the historic Zaanse Schans, theres the Restaurant de Hoop op d Swarte Walvis, a historic area which serves great food and great conversations with the staff as well. And for those craving for a more Asian palate, try the Thai restaurant t Waepen van Naang-Nuan which is famous for their fresh catches and tempting desserts. There are still so many hidden treasures when it comes to dining in Amsterdam, and discovering each one is both a pleasure to the taste and the visual sense.
Amsterdam for Artists and Designers
Really, when so much freedom has been inculcated in a place, its no wonder that the mind can roam free without inhibitions of the conventional. The Design and Art world in Amsterdam is quite commendable having progressed in leaps and bounds in the last few years, from professional industrial designers to amateur artists. Amsterdam is home to the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, which is attended by some of the most talented students from all over Europe all here to learn the techniques of architecture, graphic design, fashion design, jewelry design and textile design with specialized departments such as ceramics and photography. Given this, its no wonder that so many shops in the area give homage to beautiful designs from furniture to accessories. Popular shops such as Bebob design in Prinsengracht, Moooi Gallery, Droog at Staalstraat, Mobilia Woonstudio, Pols Potten and the Frozen Fountain are all found in Amsterdam, giving designers a milieu for good lighting, interiors, different baubles and inspirational pieces to choose from.
Bike through the Country and Check out Muiderslot Castle
One of the great historic treasures of the town of Muiden and Amsterdam, the Muiderslot Castle has now been set to its former glory and is prepared to celebrate its 132nd anniversary as a museum this 2010. The castle houses many ancient arms, armories and paintings back from its original state as a residence and ammunition depot. Having survived a demolition attempt from the government on several occasions in the year 1954 before the local government unit stepped in and declared the castle as an impotant historical site in Amsterdam and the town of Muiden itself, the castle is now set to invite many tourists to take part in its affairs and history. The rooms from the kitchen down to the bedrooms have been fully restored properly to its original concept as when Count Floris V first built it. For those interested, the castle is just a short drive from Amsterdam or one can take a bus going to Muiden Proper and walk a few minutes going to the castle itself.
