A Trip To The Magical English County Of Cheshire

Positioned in north-western England, the region of Cheshire is a great place to visit

. It is full of old English charm and relatively unspoiled countryside.

The main city of Chester, located on the River Dee, makes for a lovely day trip or a base for your Cheshire explorations. Parts of the city are more than two thousand years old. Visit the beautiful cathedral- construction began in the year 1092 and spanned hundreds of years. It was even left alone when Henry VIII went on a warpath against monasteries because Henry particularly liked it. Grosvenor Park is Chester's main park, with lovely Victorian paths, a miniature railway, and a children's play area. Visit Chester Castle and see the medieval remains and the military museum. Enjoy The Groves, Chester's riverside promenade. Take the kids to the Chester Zoo, one of the finest zoos in Europe. If you are not faint of heart, it even has a bat cave where the bats fly freely around the visitors. Watch the horses at the Chester Racecourse. If you happen to go to Chester around Christmas time you are in for a treat- the city has fantastic Christmas light displays.

The city's Roman ruins are famous. Chester was one of the main military bases for the Romans in England. Stroll the city walls and imagine watching the English Civil War rage beyond the walls as King Charles I did. Explore the amphitheatre, which at one time was the largest Roman wooden amphitheatre outside of Rome until they built a stone one on its foundations. The Roman Gardens include a reconstructed hypocaust, the Roman version of underfloor heating.

Cheshire has gorgeous listed buildings throughout the county. Some of the highlights are the Tudor-style timbered buildings that have survived from the fifteenth to seventeenth centuries. The best example is Little Moreton Hall near Congleton, complete with its own moat. It looks like something out of a fairy tale.

Cheshire is a nature lovers delight. It is a plain situated between hilly North Wales and the Peak District, a small portion of which is in eastern Cheshire and provides 260 square kilometres of stunning hiking. Walk through the peaceful country pastureland, explore the wooded hills, and just breathe in the serenity of the countryside. Stand in the middle of the moorland and take in the panorama around you. Cheshire is also perfect for cyclists as it is neither too hilly nor too flat. Cycle the tree-lined roads or go-off road with the whole family on the abandoned railway lines. Equestrians are also in for a treat with 300 kilometres of bridleways and byways, plus countless paths and trails. Make sure to pack a picnic, and do not forget the famous Cheshire cheese.

Cheshire has lots of beautiful estate houses and gardens to explore, such as Capesthorne Hall and Gardens and Arley Gardens. There are dozens of villages to wander around and discover the various antique shops and boutiques. There are also many markets in which to find spectacular fresh Cheshire produce. You might enjoy staying on a farm or at a country cottage. Cheshire makes for the perfect country getaway.
