A Type Of Pest Control Is Animal Repellent

As an avid gardener, one of the challenges I face is to keep critters from devouring my garden

. What gardener has not ran across this issue? I try to grow my garden organically, so pest prevention can be a bit of a challenge.

Bugs in my area love to devour my vegetable plants, so I have begun planting my garden in conjunction with repellant plants that insects generally do not like. It's really healthier and not that much more work.

For instance, planting tomatoes next to my asparagus plant can help repel asparagus bugs. Coriander, garlic, and chives go near my potato and tomato plans to help prevent aphids. I have even had some success repelling mosquitoes using catnip around my yard(who'd have thought it would be worth more than making my cat loopy?). Although it is not a perfect solution, it has produced generally good results in my yard and garden.

Bigger pests such as miles, gophers, and mice, also prove to be problematic from time to time. Repellant plants work surprisingly well in these cases as well. Castor bean plants are repellant to moles and gophers and mice have been found to dislike mint(some spearmint is great for a mojito though. It definitely won't scare away any friends.)

One time we used a live trap to capture a mole that was creating problems in our yard and quickly relocated him far away in some wide open land. Although it took a little effort, it cured our yard of holes and burrows(at least for a period of time). It was worth that effort.

In the last year or two, deer have also become a real problem in our area. A number of home deer repellent remedies exist. I have been told that spraying the plants with an egg mixture or that planting garlic can be an effective remedy.

Other gardeners have set up motion controlled lights or sounds to scare deer away(tried that, but became annoying and kept waking me up). Commercial organic deer repellent has recently showed up in our local garden store as well and I am anxious to give it a try.

Although we work hard to avoid spraying poisons around our yard, I am always looking for new ways to protect my harvest. Everything from chemical free solutions to plant placement strategies have made a difference in making sure we get to enjoy the fruits of our labors.
