A Very Brief History of the Camcorder

Camcorders have steadily grown in popularity with consumers over recent years, with technological advancements making them a versatile and popular choice for anyone who wishes to film, be it for professional or personal events. So if you're thinking about buying a camcorder, here is a very brief history of the camcorder that will explain some of the terms and associated jargon and could also help you find your perfect camera.

VHS-C

One of the earliest forms of handheld analogue camera, the VHS-C was launched in the late 1980s, and was based on a much older, heavier and bigger model. It used much smaller VHS tapes than its predecessor, which could be viewed on a traditional VCR using a specialist adapter.

8mm

Launched in 1985, and originally known as Video8, the 8mm camcorder was essentially a smaller version of the VHS-C, (its tapes resembled audio cassettes) and could record footage for up to 2 hours. Videos from an 8mm camera could also be viewed on a home VCR, but only if you connected the camera to your VCR using a lead.

The New Wave

The late 1990s saw the release of the next stage of the evolution of the camcorder, the digital MiniDV, which is similar to the 8mm, but it performed much better, and the tapes were even smaller, and could hold up to 3 hours of footage on one tape. Compared to analogue, a digital camcorder didn't experience some of the technical issues that analogue cameras did, such as colour bleeding or fading. A highlight of many MiniDV camcorders was their use of LCD screens, which enabled people to see their footage on the LCD screen on the camera straight away. Now many camcorders record film directly onto DVD, or even onto a memory card, these camcorders are known as hybrid camcorders.
