A Weekend Getaway To Amsterdam

Amsterdam is one of Europes most intriguing cities and it draws in tourists from all over the world

. With so much to see it is vital to map out what you plan on doing prior to your arrival. If you are planning a long weekend trip, it is recommended that you stay central in a city hotel. Amsterdam is a vibrant hub and if you want to see the best of what it has to offer being in the centre of the action is the way to go.

A Three Day Guide to Amsterdam

Day One

Begin your weekend with a canal cruise, considered a must-see for first-time visitors. Tickets are easy to obtain from many places near your city hotel. Amsterdam has many canals, most of which have boats that offer cruises for tourists. This is certainly an activity to do early on in your trip because it will give you a great perspective of the city.

Once youve done a bit of cruising, head on over to the Rijksmuseum and see the very best of the Dutch Golden Age. Over 400 masterpieces, including the works of Rembrandt, Frans Hals, and Vermeer can all be found under one roof.

Finish off with a bit of nightlife at Leiden Square where hundreds of restaurants, bars and clubs fill the area.

Day Two

On your second day in Amsterdam, pay a visit to the Anne Frank House and see where the young lady spent over two years of her life writing the now world famous Diary of Anne Frank.

Then, continue to travel around the city, but this time on foot. A walking tour is an extraordinary way to see a city and tour guides can meet up with you near your city hotel. Amsterdam has plenty of tourist destinations, but exploring the city with a guide can help you gain insight about the best shops, restaurants and sites to see through the eyes of a local.

Finally, end your day at the world famous red light district. Not to worry, it is mostly harmless. There, you will find mothers with children, grandmothers and grandfathers alongside prostitutes plying their trade behind glass, all in the same area. Just remember to take the same precautions as you would in any other city and you will be safe.

Day Three

Your last day in Amsterdam should begin at the Van Gogh Museum. It is home to the largest collection of the Dutch painter Vincent Van Goghs work and features over 200 paintings and 600 drawings.

Once youve been wowed by phenomenal artwork, take a trip to the charming neighborhood of Jordaan located in Amsterdams Greenwich Village. The photo-worthy district has narrow alleys, quirky specialty shops, cafes, designer boutiques, and leafy canals lined with 17th century homes.

Conclude your three day tour at Rembrantplein, one of Amsterdams main squares. Its a great place to people watch while taking a moment to relax after a jam packed three days. Once youve rested your feet, you will find there is plenty of transportation available to take you back to your city hotel. Amsterdam is remarkable city and a three day city break will leave you wanting to return!
