A Woman's Survival In This Ice Covered Continent

Having been deemed as the least likely person to consider traveling to Antarctica

because of her dislike for cold weather there is one woman who went against what she abhorred and traveled to the location twice. After her trips, she still wants another chance to return. Aware of the fact that no other place was as cold on earth was this lady. Only a few people have seen something like this and she wanted to be a part of that limited of group of people.

It was in the year 1988 when she became part of a support crew for scientists 825 miles from the South Pole at the McMurdo Station on the Ross Ice Shelf. In today's language her position was a go for, but before she was referred to as a general field assistant. Before she ever set one foot on the ice, she first had to read survival in Antarctica, written by the national science foundation. Other than this she also needed vaccinations and an extensive physical exam. The reason being there are no hospitals, no emergency rooms, nothing like that.

Other people may encounter some peril as they fly you out via helicopter for any medical treatment you need and this too can cost a lot of government money. Part of her trip to Antarctica involves an outdoor survival school she must attend after arriving. Not only will crevasse fields be easy to spot after her training but she will also be able to make a sleeping shelter away from the base.

Not only did their bathroom have four lavatories but two showers as well led from the tent through a covered path. One sign on the bathroom door stated that personnel must take only a two minute shower per week. Only necessary flushing is allowed. Abide by this until further notice. The reason behind this is to have water if a fire happens on the station. Often occurring at the water plant were mechanical problems for the equipment because they were consistently ran in sub zero temperatures.

More water cutbacks are required when this occurs. When it comes to cooking and drinking they set aside water for these purposes. They are not particularly concerned when it comes to water for flushing, showering, and doing laundry.

Making calls cannot be done without any plans made in advance. Weather affects air waves and calls do not easily come through so before anything else you need to put yourself on a call waiting list. Operating the communications link are ham radio operators.

Among the things they needed to endure over there, the cold was the most difficult one. Lasting from October through December was the summer that can measure at a temperature of 32 degrees. During January, other temperature changes occur. The changing temperature was accounted for in her diaries.

If necessary, pair work based on the weather may happen. Also, the weather can prohibit outdoor travel. All travel is forbidden by intense weather conditions. Realizing a lot of personal things due to isolation was her. Change was inevitable. Such a swaggering person was this woman before the Antarctica trip. Sometimes it takes two to tango and she has realized this. She is able to relax after realizing this.

There's something about that continent. Being able to walk on a continent where only a few if not zero people have been to before is rather remarkable. Here, man has been everywhere. He's been in the timber, he's been on the mountain, he's been in the rivers, he's been everywhere.
