Hannover zoo in Germany is one of the most unique zoos in Europe

, featuring over 2000 varieties of animals. Created in 1865, the zoo is divided into 6 different worlds, each depicting natural habitats, themes and animals from around the world.

What makes Hannover so special however, is the experience visitors have as they come face to face with the wild animals. The large recreated natural habitats are seemingly without any barricades between animal and spectator.

The first of these is the Sambezi. This is the African Savannah of Hannover. Animals such as rhinoceros, giraffes and flamingos can be seen as visitors take a 10 minute boat ride down the man- made river flowing through the middle of this area. Visitors then proceed on foot to look at animals the animals of this habitat such as lions.

From Africa to India, visitors emerge into the lost world of the Maharajas. Recreated to resemble a once great Indian palace ground, the ruins are inhabited by leopards, tigers, enormous snakes, hanuman langurs and the ever popular elephants. Visitors can explore the interior of the old palace premises. The daily Elephant Show is a vastly popular item on the agenda.

The newest world to be introduced to the zoo is Yukon Bay. It depicts an old Canadian river side village and incorporates an old gold mine and canyons. Polar bears, Wolves, Sea Lions, Caribous, Penguins and Polar foxes are the stars of this region.

Mullewapp or Mollys World is a modern day petting zoo. A childrens park completes the picture.

Gorilla Mountain is a beautifully landscaped section with lush foliage and cascading waterfalls which is home to gorillas as well as chimpanzees and gibbons.

Meyers Farm is a 19th century farm with rare breeds such as the Pomeranian rough wool sheep, Husum protest pigs and Exmoor ponies.
