A great activity for boys and their father

When I was about the age my boy is now, I started using coloring pages as a hobby with my Dad. I really enjoyed working on them but I also loved having alone time with my dad and having something we could do as a team. So you can imagine how keen I am to continue this tradition and now begin having fun with my boy and some coloring pages.

You might be like me and find that a lot of the hobbies for children to do these days are very expensive or something that I haven't a hope of joining in with. I mean I certainly can't skateboard, I can't swim and I definitely do not know how to use a computer or playstation to play games. I am lost when it comes to computers, I really am. I know it is inevitable that as my son grows that he will soon enough be looking to do things on his own and it will be uncool to be seen with his dad so I am making a big attempt to spend as much quality time as I can with him now and really make these little moments all add up. They say time is the most precious gift you can give to a youngster and I am trying hard to live by that. It seems increasingly hard to find hobbies that Fathers can do with their little ones. Mums seem to get most of the fun.

Coloring Sheets are really good fun, my son really enjoys the pictures I download from the web site kidslikecoloringpages.com. I like to constantly tell him the names of the colors he is using and I feel he is learning them because of this, especially his favourites Green and Blue. Every time he starts to use a word I have taught him I really get a unique buzz that you have to be a father to understand. It really makes me feel like I am contributing to his growth. I also tell him the names of the thing he is currently coloring, like an elbow, a coat, a house, a helicopter etc etc. Someone a lot cleverer than me once said that repetition creates learning so who am I to argue! This positive bit of brainwashing can only do good.

He will soon be old enough that in a year or so we will be able to break out the paints and see what he is like using them on the Coloring Pages. I know he will love this although I am cautiously excited at the thought of the mess it could make! I am sure I will blow his tiny mind the first time I mix two colors together to make a whole new one, such as red and green coming together to make brown. Looking back I can clearly see the developments he has made over the last months while using Coloring Pages even though he thought he was just having fun. I can really see how his concentration has really improved. When he settles down into an interesting picture he can just lose himself into it and his ability to stay within the lines has really come on in leaps and bounds. He seems to have quickly learned that by going slower his accuracy improves and things are easier overall, which is a good life lesson on it's own! He is too young yet to start trying to sign his name on his work so I ask him to draw me his face as a signature and he always does so with a wide smile on it, which tells me he had a good time working on it!

When his work is completed I save a lot of them in a scrapbook. I know I will treasure them in years to come. The walls of my home will be the natural resting place for many more, mostly in the den or conservatory I imagine. I want to let my son know how proud I am of his efforts and that he should feel proud of them also. When I was a child I probably didn't get enough praise, which may explain my sometimes lack of confidence so believe me when I say I make sure my child gets plenty of it. I love to see his head swell a bit when visitors come to the house and give his works praise. It seems to be helping him come out of his shell a bit too, he'll now engage a bit more with people he seemed a bit shy towards previously. Just the other day he offered to make a new coloring page at once for an Aunt that he doesn't get to see too often and as such had always been a bit nervous of.

Like all children he is a big fan of everything that Disney has ever made. So Disney Coloring Pages are often used. Give him anything with Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck on and he will be very happy! Their newest cool star is Handy Manny, a helpful handyman and I am happy that like all of their products, these characters are positive role models. You do not have to worry about anything your child may see when they are watching a Disney show! When he gets older I am secretly hoping that he will get into Superheroes. I ate, slept and drank Superheroes practically when I was a young teen and really hope we can have this in common too. Batman and Spiderman were my favourites and I have already spotted some pages I can't wait to get him started on! I think all boys grow into a thirst for safe adventure and drama so hopefully my wishes will come true and soon I can be telling him about the adventures of his heroes while we decide colors for Batmans cape!

At special occasions like the Holidays we pretty much blanket the walls of our home in Coloring Pages. At Christmas there are pictures of Santa, Reindeer, Presents, Christmas Trees, Gifts, Carol Singers and much more all over the house. While in October no matter where you go in our home there will probably be a Pumpkin, Ghost, Witch or Haunted House staring at you! I make sure to store them all away carefully afterwards and intend to be re-using them still when I have grandkids to show them to. So if you are a parent and are looking for easy and low cost ways to spend quality time with your kids I would say use Coloring Pages, you really can't go wrong with them.
