A great mono printer for a small network, The Lexmark T650

Mono, heavy-duty, workhorse printers are still the stalwarts of small businesses

and work groups and the Lexmark T650dn is another addition to the ranks. The T650 is one of three printers that use the same engine. The T650n includes a 350 sheet standard input capacity, The T650dn adds a duplexer and the T650dtn ups the input capacity to 900 sheets. Comments about print speed and output quality applies to all three models.

At 13.7x16.7x19.4 inches the T650dn is fairly big and is made even more so by the duplex unit. The T650dn weighs 40.6 pounds so you won't want to move it around much but it is simple to get operational. Windows XP and Vista and Mac OS 10.2 and later operating system drivers come provided and others are available from Lexmarks' web site.

The T650dn's front panel has an LCD display, buttons for navigating the menus and a number pad which when used with the internal memory allows jobs to be held until the user enters a pin or password. The T650dn includes both USB and Ethernet sockets on the front and rear and if required it is possible to get wireless networking and parallel interfaces as extras.

Additional options for the T650dn include a 250 sheet drawer, a 550 sheet drawer, a 2000 sheet drawer, an output expander with an additional 550 sheet output bin, a 1,850 sheet output stacker, a five bin mailbox, and a stapler finisher. The#T650dn's 350 sheet capacity will almost certainly not be enough for the typical small business.

The T650dn uses either 7,000 page or 25,000 page Lexmark toner cartridges (0T650A11E and 0T650AH11E) with the bigger capacity being much cheaper to use over time.

The T650dn prints text of a high standard. Graphics are not quite as good with some banding evident in darker patches. Photos from the T650 were OK, again showing some banding and there was a loss of some detail.

The T650dn produced 34 pages a minute which is an excellent result. Even when using the duplex unit the T650dn managed 27 sides a minute which is most impressive.

There is no doubt the Lexmark T650dn is an excellent printer for its target market. The features offered are generous and overall it performed very well. Print quality is good, it is quick and it is reasonably cheap to run. The low capacity paper handling was the only real disappointment but this can be rectified. The T650dn should definitely be high on your list of contenders.
