A large waist circumference can be dangerous
Is having a large waist a health hazard
60 percent of Canadians are overweight or obese. People who are
overweight have increased risk of serious chronic diseases that reduce life expectancy. A recent study indicates that excess fat around the abdomen area is particularly dangerous for your health.
A big problem
Near 60 percent of Canadian adults, or more than 14 million people, are overweight or obese. This situation is problematic, because the excess weight is associated with a variety of health problems, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancers (especially colon cancers).
The criterion which is currently the most used to determine the excess weight is the Body Mass Index (
BMI). To calculate (BMI), you divide your weight (in kilograms) by your height (in square meters). In the case of a man of 1,75 m whose weighs is 75 kg, his (BMI) can be calculated by the following formula: 75 divided by (1.75 x 1.75) = 24
As our size does not change once we have reached adulthood, increasing our weight still causes an increase in our (BMI), for example, a man is suffering from overweight if he weighed 85 kg with a (BMI=27) and is definitely obese if his weighed is 100 kg with a (BMI=32). Because the risk of chronic diseases is directly related to your BMI, avoid as much as possible the accumulation of grease around the waist while aging, a facet of preventing such diseases.
Abdominal fat
Several studies have shown that health problems associated with overweight are particularly important when the fat has accumulated around the abdominal organs. That abdominal fat, also called visceral fat is particularly dangerous because it causes disruptions inside the body, especially an increase in bad cholesterol, a resistance to insulin and the development of a chronic inflammation. The excess fat at this level can be very easily checked out by wrapping a seamstress tape around the waist, just above the navel: A waist circumference greater than 102 cm (40 inches) for men or 88 cm (35 inches) for women indicates an excess of abdominal fat potentially hazardous to your health.
A prediction of premature death
To determine the impact of abdominal fat on the risk of premature mortality, American researchers have followed for nine years the causes of death of 104,843 persons aged 50 and over, and they correlated these deaths with the waistline of those people who died. They observed that the risk of dying from respiratory disease was two times higher in men with a waist circumference exceeding 120 cm (47 inches), comparatively to those with normal waist circumferences. This increased risk appears to be even higher among women, those presenting a higher waist circumference of 110 cm (43 inches) having 2.5 times more likely to die prematurely of diseases than those with a normal waistline. A very important point of the study is that the increased risk of premature death is observed regardless of the BMI of people. In other words, the presence of an excess of fat in the abdomen reduces life expectancy in all people, even among those with a normal BMI, a sudden increase in waist circumference represents an alarm signal which should not be ignored: instead of passively accepting to put on each morning larger clothes, its rather high time to change your habits by adopting a
diet and adding more physical activities into your daily program.
