A linguist and doctor in one phenomenal lady
A well respected female physician recounts how she took some time out for the odd
party as she envisioned achieving her current status by a roundabout route, a tribute to the unswerving purpose of her meaningful life. But back when she was a high school student, single mindedness was not one of her traits. Back when she was a local high school girl, she couldn't make up her mind on her career choices linguistics or medicine? So she decided to conquer it all French, Spanish, English and all the sciences as well! Though she was excellent in languages, she still looked on to the wisdom of her Spanish teacher in deciding. While the teacher told her that she can be a multilingual doctor, she can never be a linguist that is sometimes a doctor.
She was greeted by nothing but science subjects as her A-level studies when she went to the local community college. The results, after two years, were not encouraging, but she was undeterred. She only passed in her favorite area which was Chemistry.Through the back door of the university which is Natural Sciences, she entered so that she can take medicine the next year. Since her performance was not that good, she won't be able to transfer, but then she did have a good time. The grades she got were more B's than A's. For this reason, and for her growing love of chemistry, she therefore decided to complete the degree. With her growing fondness toward chemistry, she decided to major in it along with food technology. It was in this field that she got her honors degree.
She could not get a job after graduating. After leaving the university walls, she could not find a job. There was just no job out there. She looked at the food industry for a job. She asked why she ever got into this whenever she was in the face of discouragement.
The sole person that could offer her a job was a man who dealt with drugs and decided to offer her huge pay after he saw how proficient she was in handling industrial kettles. She described that she was indeed offered so much but then she made it clear that she was taught by her parents that money is not all and she did not even get tempted by the offer. She continued applying in various medical schools while firmly holding on to her dreams of becoming a physician. She accepted a teaching job while she was fearful and hopeless from not hearing anything from medical school.
Since she knows that money is essential once she gets accepted in medical school, she decides to leave her teaching post to work as a trainee manager in a commercial bank a year later. In the course of her weighing out the pros and cons as well as speaking to different people that she knew, one thing stood out she would simply become a mere employee if she decides to stay on with the commercial bank. Medicine offered her the option of having her own business and doing what she wanted.
She finally joined medical school after two years. Year one traditionally is a mix of fun and learning. Immersing herself was something she did. She was never a bookworm neither was she a party poop but then she studied enough. First year, her achievements included being among the top 10 percent in Physiology as well as receiving many honors in community health. She valued the sense of connectedness to the people and this was the reason why she loved community medicine. You gain access to the bigger picture of your patients' lives as you enter into their homes. She admired the exceptional program.
When the discussion about cutting up cadavers came, she said that she might get very squeamish but she won't be affected emotionally. But when Pathology comes in, we see a different story. Ten weeks were spent crying when she had to do autopsies on the recently dead. She felt the emotional loss of their deaths. Pharmacology she loved, perhaps because of her background in chemistry. The interaction of chemicals in the system as well as its power in curing diseases truly amazed her.
An activity though quite unusual for her like reading journals in the library is still something that she would do. With an honor in Pharmacology, everyone got shocked. With five of her study buddies, she gained a party organizer reputation and shied away from being the bookworm she wanted to be. Doing well in their finals, three of them got high distinction. A medal in gynecology was taken home by one of her group members among other awards. After all that happened, we can say that our time was well spent after all.
