With British Airways talking about more strikes this summer, do you really need the hassle of going abroad for your holiday? As we all know by now, even if you avoid booking a BA flight, the severe disruption caused throughout the airport has a knock-on effect to all aspects of air travel. So why not look at an alternative this year?
It is true that in the past there has been concern that the cost of a UK holiday far exceeds that of a vacation taken further afield. Fortunately that is now far from the truth and, of course, for those of us concerned about the cost' to the environment, the benefits of taking a holiday closer to home are immense. The poor exchange rate for the Euro has made European holidays a fairly pricey option and although there are some good deals around for long haul flights and some great last minute deals for cruises, these are not suitable for everyone particularly if you have the whole family to consider.
So why not try a holiday in the UK? Granted, the weather is not always 100% reliable but there are plenty of ways to cope with that. For the most part, even if it's not the blistering temperature you might like, to get out in the fresh air exploring our beautiful countryside gives everyone a great feeling. Helping each other to climb to the top of Coniston's Old Man' for example provides an exhilarating bonding experience like no other, and the fresh air and exercise will mean you'll be ready for the warm welcome and local food and ale supplied in the pub when you get back down. For those slightly more inclement days the kids can enjoy some of the great indoor activity centres around climbing walls, splash parks with wave machines, 4D cinema experiences. And if the adults are lucky enough to get away by themselves for a while, there are plenty of ways to pamper yourselves when you're not trying new and exhilarating outdoor pursuits.
Whether you are looking to holiday on a budget or splash out on a bit of luxury, blighty has a lot to offer! Just a few examples would be: to hire a cruiser and sail it down the Norfolk Broads for a bit of adventure; go and watch dolphins in Scotland; try a bit of surfing in Cornwall; sailing on Lake Windermere or some hill walking in the Lake District. There are plenty of choices for the fun loving adventurists but, if your idea of a holiday is to relax and do very little for the week, why not book yourself into one of our luxurious country house hotels. The UK has some of the finest hotels in Europe, many set in classic unspoilt countryside perfect whether you are looking for a weekend break or a longer holiday.
Truly, sun, sea and sand may not always be on offer here in the UK but there are pleanty of great alternatives. So, give the check-in desk a wide birth this year and settle for something home-grown'.
