A look at the aftermath of the attack on Pearl Harbor

The political results of the attack on Pearl Harbor were far more important than the military and strategic ones. The attack caused a powerful wave of indignation in the United States. President Roosevelt considered the attack as a date which will live in infamy" reflecting the popular feeling. Americans called the Japanese "yellow bastards" and the public opinion, that few hours before was against any entanglement in hostilities, now was veered and asked for the declaration of war against Japan. Some scholars assert that the attack on Pearl Harbor condemned Japan to defeat because it mobilized the "sleeping beast" and galvanized overnight a divided nation towards support for entering the war. Listening to the popular feeling, President Roosevelt declared on the same day the war against Japan and his decision was ratified with only one dissent, that of Senator Jeannette Rankin from Montana. This political decision was very important because it allowed the involvement of a huge economic power in the Second World War. If it hadnt been for the Pearl Harbor attack, the United States would have most likely needed more months for deciding their entanglement in the War. The entry of the United States in the War thrilled the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who supported the US policies and hoped for the involvement of the USA in the clash. On the contrary, in Germany, the entanglement of the USA in the War was accepted with scepticism and displeasure. Hitler and Gering did not consider the USA an important military force. Gering declared "I do not underestimate the Americans. They are beyond competition in the manufacture of razor blades. Don't forget, however, that the word "bluff" is the key of their society". Considering subsequent events during the war at the Pacific a question mark can now be put as to the value of this, apparently, devastating, Japanese victory. Japanese had shown the world that they were a strong military nation with a strong navy and an extremely efficient air force. But it might be argued that military results of Pearl Harbor were less substantial than originally estimated. Time did show that many of the old battleships lost would sooner been obsolete and that the Japanese would have been better served destroying the fleet facilities. In addition, the American carrier and submarine forces remained intact. All these lead to one conclusion: the attack of Pearl Harbor served the American interests and offered the excuse that Churchill and Roosevelt were looking for so that the United States entered in the Second World War. The Japanese made a fatal strategic mistake, which cost them the attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki a few years later with significant greater casualties than those of the U.S. fleets at Pearl Harbor.About the Author:
