As businesses become more and more competitive with each other, we see an increasing amount of marketing strategies being used as one desperately tries to gain the edge over the other companies. Often these come down to different types of media advertisement, the most prominent used by big businesses, being television advertising. These are extremely expensive, especially when you consider the results may not always be worth it, as when adverts are on people tend to leave the room and after the 30 second or so interval it is often forgotten.

Even when they are not forgotten, they are often considered to be a nuisance that rarely caters to the viewer or listener, for instance, as someone who lives in a city, I know I won't need a car much and therefore, don't have one. Yet there are countless jingles from car insurance adverts I could hum at will. And catchphrases that everyone can remember but which nobody can seem to place.

There are ways to make the adverts more memorable, but these means that marketers have to come up with some sort of visual narrative that is in no way related to the product, such as the Cadbury's Gorilla. While this particular advert was memorable enough for me to use as an example many others have tried and failed, thus wasting money. This makes me wonder about other methods that seem more direct in their approach and that wouldn't cost a stupid amount of money to maintain, and led me to think about items like business related gifts. Those examples of marketing always seem to remind you of the business and product because it's tangible and often prominent in your life. I'm sat at a desk now in which all the pens have a company name on them and thus I am marketed to. Another reason why these would be better is that they are actually useful as you get things that are useful in the home environment such as coasters and for the business environment you can get rulers and mouse mats for work. You can even get keyrings with product names on them nowadays and those are much more important than the Cadbury's advert.

Don't get me wrong an animated gorilla drumming along to Phil Collins is impressive, but I've never tried looking for one when I need a bottle opener or to jot down some notes.
