A review of UK's Procurement Industry in Recession

The economic difficulties over the last 12 months have presented the Procurement profession with an opportunity to raise its profile. With sales on the decline, cost savings and efficiencies have become the key strategic goals for most organisations. However, has Procurement really seized this opportunity? Within the Procurement community there have been many examples of excellence through successful cost saving and supply chain management projects but how is this success being shared with the wider business world? A recent Supply Management SM100 poll suggests purchasing needs to improve its image with the next generation. The opportunities for travel and the scope to make strategic, influential decisions are not being highlighted meaning school leavers and graduates are not considering a role in Procurement as a viable career option. At the entry level it is also an underpaid profession compared to HR, legal and finance. So, how can Procurement overcome this? How can it become an exciting career opportunity? These questions need to be addressed by the industry as a whole and by CIPS in order to keep the flow of talent coming through. The immediate need within the profession is to find experienced, talented individuals. Many organisations are looking at major recruitment projects in 2010, with a strong focus on the indirect categories and well as the soft skills, such as stakeholder management and supplier relationship development.
