A sneak peek at OS X 10.7 Lion

Lion was previewed at this weeks Back to the Mac event

There are many new and exciting features due in the next release of OS X 10.7 and we thought we would cover some of them in a little more detail here.

First off we have the App Store, this is an adaptation of the one from iOS 4.0 and seen on all Apple's current mobile platforms, including the iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad.

The OS will allow the traditional way of installing and obtaining applications but will bring a new versatility, speed and concise way of obtaining and updating applications in the App Store for Mac.

If you have a problem to address or a specific sort of App you are interested in you can perform a search or look at the latest charts and categories for that sort of product, you will be kept up to date with the latest and greatest in the form of Applications.

It brings the easiest way to install an application to your Mac to date and also a seamless and quick way of keeping all the apps on your mac up to date just like software update does for the OS.

The greatest bit of news to come from this is that it will also be available for Snow Leopard within 90 days!

Next we have the Launchpad

This brings an iPad style interface to seeing all your Apps at once, including folders as seen in iOS 4.2 for the iPad. It makes choosing the application you want easy and seemless, if you have too many the old faithful Spotlight will help you out still.

It also has several pages to it so you can swipe through them with the multi touch trackpad, newly installed apps from the AppStore are also automatically added to the launchpad.

Full Screen Apps

The beauty of the iPad is that you have your app full screen with no distractions to get in the way. No Dock, no Menu bar, no nothing. Just the beauty of the app you are working with full screen!

This amazing feature is coming to Lion, with one click you will be able to make the app full screen. You can then swipe your fingers across the track pad to switch between apps.

With the combination of the trackpad and the features of the iOS straight on the desktop OS it is bringing a fantastic world of features to the desktop. The user experience cannot get much better than this.

Mission control

Now then, one of the best features of OS X we feel is expose. It gives you a quick look at all the applications you have open at once, and gives you an easy way of navigating between them.

Mission control takes this to the next level! You can now see all of your open apps at once, see several instances/windows of one app collected into a stack of apps as shown in the image above and you see all of your spaces to allow you to quickly navigate between everything.

Mission control yet again is quickly accessed via a gesture on the trackpad. If you don't have a trackpad on a macbook there is now the magic trackpad without a trackpad of some form you will be missing out on so much of Lion, it is definately worth investing in one!

Mac OS X 10.7 Lion is on it's way, we can't wait!
