A visit to Lindos on the Greek Island of Rhodes
A visit to Lindos on the Greek Island of Rhodes
From our holiday base in Pefkos, a coastal resort on the Greek Island of Rhodes, we headed off on the short bus journey to the tourist town of Lindos.
Now one word of warning, as with most Greek Islands, the bus service can be erratic. What I mean is that you could stand at what seems like a bona fide' bus stop for hours and no bus will stop or even pass you by. Always check with the staff at local hotels or shops to find out where the bus will definitely stop, so that you are not left behind. Luckily we chose one of the well-used stops, so were soon on our way.
Now, some may ask what the draw to Lindos is? Well, as our bus drew into Lindos we got our first sight of the Acropolis, a majestic piece of historic architecture towering above the town of whitewashed buildings, and we knew straightaway why we had come. The views of this town were unlike anything I had ever seen before. As we walked down the hill into the town of Lindos we came across enough souvenir shops to please even the most fervent bargain hunter. You really could browse around there for hours and not visit the same shop twice.
Above the town of white painted buildings, rising to approximately 400 feet, is the flat topped rock that provides the foundations of the Acropolis. You have two routes to choose from when climbing up towards the Acropolis and again you need to be careful. Choosing the donkey trail as we did by mistake, you could well end up coming face to face with a donkey bearing down on you through the narrow streets. Believe me, they don't deviate from their route once they get going, so it's not advisable to get in their way. At one point, having stopped to look at some postcards outside a shop, I literally had to jump out of a donkey's path!
Footwear is an important consideration. We found trainers or walking sandals ideal for the fairly strenuous uphill walk over stony tracks. Some others visitors we saw on the way up had opted for flip flops and seemed to be having serious trouble staying upright.
Once at the top we were treated to some spectacular views from the Acropolis. The beach and town below were a splendid sight, along with the gorgeous setting of many a Greek wedding in the small church of St Pauls Bay. There is also an old stone amphitheatre set at the foot of the slope, although this is best viewed from the hill on the other side of the town.
Another very important warning for all but especially for parents of young children, there are no safety barriers anywhere around the Acropolis so beware! Any errant runaway child could easily be lost to the rocks and sea below. We had left our son with family for the day, but had we not, we would probably not have gone to the top of the Acropolis for these safety reasons. It certainly would be important for any children going to the top to be held onto securely by their parent or carer.
The steep descent back into town for lunch took us past the many Greek ladies selling their handmade lace. Everything from tablecloths, napkins and even toilet roll holders were laid out along the route. It was hard to resist making a purchase with such beautiful items on display.
Before long we found ourselves back on the cobblestoned streets again, and after a delicious lunch at one of the rooftop restaurants, we strolled back up to the bus stop to go back to Pefkos. Our visit to Lindos was a truly memorable day.
