A walk through the Conde Duque and Malasaa Neighborhoods of Madrid
Madrid Walks...Madrid is a city that offers great things. In fact, one of its greatest pleasures is as small and simple as the act of walking around the city stopping occasionally at a bar. Often the best tours and the best bars can be enjoyed in the small neighborhoods that have withstood the test of time, such as the areas of Conde Duque and Malasaa. There you will find the uncomplicated art of enjoying the good things in life which is part of the art of living in Madrid.
I suggest a tour that begins in front of the Cuartel de Conde Duque on the street of the same name, between the roundabout (glorieta) de Ruiz Jimenz (Metro San Bernado) and the calle de Princesa (Metro Plaza de Espaa). Across from el Cuartel you will find a small, quiet and pleasant square, Plaza de los Guardias de Corps, cross it to get to la calle del Limn. There awaits a mythical tavern, La Taberna del Limn (c/Limn 22), first opened in the early eighties when the neighborhood was old and forgotten. It has a wonderful atmosphere and they pour some of the best draft beer.
Refreshed after enjoying a couple of beers, head to the Plaza de las Comendadoras, one of the best places in Madrid to sit at one of the outdoor cafes in the summertime. At one end of the square stands a legendary beerhouse, el Cangrejero (c/Amaniel 25), a must for great beer and to sample some of the best pork rinds in Madrid. On the other side of the plaza is the Metropolitan Caf in spring and summertime it has a delightful terrace to sit, relax and enjoy the company of friends. Do not miss the bar de Mao (c/Palma 72) a charming old bar serving great tapas, patatas bravas and croquetas are a must. Nearby on la Calle de La Palma, is the bar La Palmera (C/Palma 67)with its libertarian and relaxed atmosphere.
Head towards Calle San Bernardo and on to La Plaza del Dos de Mayo in the heart of the Malasaa quarter. The square is beautiful make sure to stop and enjoy it. Wonder around Malasaa taking in its people and atmosphere, my advice is to head to the Va Lctea (c/Velarde 18) a legendary cocktail bar opened since the seventies, known as one of director Pedro Almodovar's favorite hang outs in the 80's. Great music, good drinks and a nice pool table awaits you! I am staying here, but if you want to continue, you are one step away from Barcel, Fuencarral and Chueca.
