ACC Football Predictions 2010

ACC Atlantic Predictions

1. Florida State Seminoles -It's going to take an improved defense to win the Atlantic, I expect to see just that under new coordinator Mark Stoops. Offensively, the Noles should be among the most potent teams in the league. QB Christian Ponder could put up big enough numbers to enter the Heisman discussion.

2. Clemson Tigers - Clemson will remain a contender in the Atlantic, but ultimately, I believe the losses of C.J. Spiller and Jacoby Ford will be too much to overcome.

3. Boston College Eagles - It will be nice to see 2008 ACC Defensive Player of the Year Mark Herzlich back in action. He will give an added boost to what should be a solid defense. An offense that ranked 98th in the nation in yards per game in 2009 is what figures to hold the Eagles back.

4. North Carolina State Wolf Pack -Russell Wilson is as exciting a player as there is in the ACC. He threw for 3,027 yards and 31 touchdowns with only 11 picks last season. He'll bring the offensive fireworks to Raleigh once again, but unfortunately the defense won't hold up on its end of the bargain.

5. Maryland Terrapins - The Terps limp into the 2010 season after losing their last 7 games in '09. Maryland was torched through the air a season ago, and it was the worst scoring defense as a result. I'm just not sure the Terps have the horses for Don Brown's blitz-happy system.

6. Wake Forest Demon Deacons - Wake missed the boat in 2009, losing 5 games by 3 points or less, including 2 in overtime. Now, Jim Grobe really figures to have his work cut out for himself after losing record-setting QB Riley Skinner.

ACC Coastal Predictions

1. Virginia Tech Hokies -The Hokies lose a lot of starters on defense, but Frank Beamer always seems to reload rather than rebuild. That's why the Hokies have finished in the top 12 nationally in both scoring and total defense each of the last six seasons. Missing out on the ACC title game last season should fuel the Hokies to get back to the top of the league.

2. Miami Hurricanes - Miami has a team capable of winning the Coastal, but it will likely have to beat Virginia Tech in order to do so. The Hurricanes will get the Hokies at home after getting embarrassed in Blacksburg last season, but the fact that they get them so late in the year doesn't bode well. Beamer teams almost always get better as the season goes on. The Hokies won each of their four November games by double digits last year.

3. North Carolina Tar Heels - UNC will be in the mix for the Coastal Division title as well. The Heels play suffocating defense, and their defense was good enough to beat both VA Tech and Miami last season. But UNC was one of the worst offensive teams in the county (108th in total offense), and that's why I have the Heels coming up just short.

4. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets -The Jackets should continue to find success with their option offense despite the loss of Jonathan Dwyer. The Jackets won a lot of close games last season that could have easily gone the other way so there is reason to think they'll endure a few more losses. I guess we'll really find out what they're made of when they go to Clemson and VA Tech and then come back home to play Miami in consecutive weeks.

5. Duke Blue Devils - Coach K couldn't even do what David Cutcliffe has done in leading a team which had three winless seasons last decade to 9 wins the last two years. He's found ways to get the most out of guys who are giving up a lot in the talent department when compared to other players across the league. Duke will likely take a small step back in 2010 as QB Thad Lewis will be missed.

6. Virginia Cavaliers - A big win at UNC highlighted a season that was otherwise miserable. The offense was anemic last year, meaning new coach Mike London has a lot of work to do.

ACC Championship Game Prediction - Virginia Tech over Florida State
