AGM Batteries, otherwise known as Absorbed Glass Mat batteries

, are a type of valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA)battery. Originally designed in California to withstand warmth and vibrations, they have been further developed to be useful in an array of applications. Currently, they are used in recreational vehicles (RVs), as well as in Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) units.

Absorbed glass mat batteries have a special design that prevent them from leaking any acid into their surroundings. They have a special glass mat in between the positive and negative plates within the cell that keeps the chemicals from flooding its cell. That same glass plate also lessens the effects of vibrations from the environment, again allowing for a greater security of the chemicals within the battery.

There are many advantages that these batteries have over conventional (flooded) lead-acid cells. They have a high power density and do not need to be maintained, or refilled with water, like the flooded batteries do. Also, they function well in exceptionally cold surroundings, even under zero degrees celcius and fahrenheit.

There are a few disadvantages to these cells, however. Although they can last up to ten years, they cannot be discharged as deeply as traditional flooded batteries can. Also, these cells cannot be overcharged; Electrolytes that are burned during overcharging are irreplaceable, and overcharging would cause the cell to fail earlier than it should.

AGM Batteries are very useful in many applications. They are safe for the environment and work well in various climates. They also are strong, in structure as well as in application; their design allows for the effects of vibration, and the purer lead within the cell makes for stronger energy output. Although they may be relatively pricey, they are a good investment for those who need such batteries in their personal or professional projects.
