AGM batteries are the new state of the art technology
. The word AGM means Absorbed Glass Mat. It is a type of valve regulated lead acid battery in which the electrolytic chemicals are placed on a glass mat separator.
These absorbed glass mat batteries were initially made around 1985 for the specific use in military air planes and other such automotive vehicles. The basic advantage it offered was the ability to withstand warm weather with an extra bit of efficiency to be vibration resistant.
But in the modern world of today, its applications are not restricted to the military field only but it has made its mark in all spheres of auto mobile industry. These batteries are made in a special sealed casing which gives the advantage that there is no spilling and the lead and acid have absolutely no connection with the environment.
These AGM batteries use pure lead and have a very low internal resistance that allows them to charge and discharge more readily without the production of extensive heat. This is a real blessing for those people who are a bit careless as it is almost maintenance free. There is no need of watering the battery in the span of its complete life time. As the acid is totally surrounded by the glass matting so there is no chance of corrosion or even rusting.
They not only work in the warm weather but can withstand both temperature extremes. They will not freeze or crack down that easily and can operate below the freezing point. Due their specific construction parameters they are highly vibration resistant and thus ideal for rough use as well.
But extreme care should be taken during the charging process as a small amount of overcharging can damage the battery. If the overcharging is prolonged the electrolyte may completely burn up and the battery is then useless.
