AIDS and Population Penetration

We have done much to stop the spread of AIDS in western nations

, however many countries still have a high prevalence of AIDS in their societies. Some countries have quite high rates of AIDS prevalence in their communities. All countries in the top ten which have people infected with AIDS as a percentage of their total population are African nations. In fact, this percentage goes as high as twenty eight percent (of the population infected with AIDS; data is from 2003 so it may be quite old now however this number is unlikely to be dramatically different now). The top ten countries are as follow (and their respective population percentage is written next to them):

Lesotho: 28.09 percent of the population has HIV/AIDS;

Swaziland: 26.01 percent of the population has HIV/AIDS;

Zimbabwe: 24.06 percent of the population has HIV/AIDS;

Botswana: 23.09 percent of the population has HIV/AIDS;

South Africa: 18.01 percent of the population has HIV/AIDS;

Namibia: 15.03 percent of the population has HIV/AIDS;

Zambia: 15.02 percent of the population has HIV/AIDS;

Malawi: 14.02 percent of the population has HIV/AIDS;

Central African Republic: 13.05 percent of the population has HIV/AIDS;

Mozambique: 12.05 percent of the population has HIV/AIDS;

Again, it should be stated that some of this data is as old as 2003. However, what is interesting to note is that they are all African nations. So now, the question has to be asked; why are the top ten nations all African? Well, there are a few basic reasons but no single reason. Firstly, safe sex education was slower to proliferate through these countries. This is coupled with a high precedence of sex trade workers working while infected and not using protection such as condoms.

Although it is not all relative to this in particular (although the problem does stem from this). Many of those who are infected with HIV or AIDS may not even be aware that they have the illness. Couple this with cultural and religious proclivities that consider safe sex a sin or taboo and you have a melting pot of HIV and AIDS transmission. Although, the data itself is directly relevant to people who have received treatment for their illness the number is likely to be a little higher because of the lack of knowledge about people who actually have the disease.

Many systems have been set up to teach African countries about the importance of safe sex in fact many attempts have been made to get people aware by giving out free condoms to people in the community, education campaigns and education system reform that has some focus on teaching the younger generation about the risks of unsafe sex. Although, it does need to be stated that because of the disruption caused to the area by the attempted colonisation by other nations and then the void that has been left when these nations have pulled out of the region has had an impact on the education system in these countries.
