Scarf was used firstly in Rome where people wore it during summer in order to clean the sweat that flowed from the head and neck. In Latin scarf is known as sudarium which means sweat cloth. Originally men used to wear scarves made of cloth but now even women wear scarves to beautify one's look. In the 19th century and in mid 20th century, the use of scarves became a popular fashion statement for both the sexes. James Magee wore a scarf for the first time and popularized it. Knitting scarves is a source of trade in various countries. Scarves those are hands knitted are appreciated the world over as gifts. Some high profile fashion brands like Dior, Prada, Chanel, Etro etc. Offer printed scarves. Sometimes scarves are used along with academic uniform and are worn by sports lovers to acknowledge their team. Scarves are generally used for functional use and practical use. Functional use is connected to the climatic conditions and the exposure to the environment. Scarves are very useful during the cold season when one can tie it in the neck region and cover the head to keep it warm. In dry regions one may tie a thin bandana, kerchief or head scarf to keep one's hair clean. A scarf gives a casual look when worn over a skirt as a pareo or jeans and also worn as a belt around the waist. Small scarf can be tied around one's ponytail beautifying one's hair style. Wrapping scarves in the hair can avoid breakage and splits in the hair. It locks up moisture so that the hair remains healthy and shiny. Scarves can give an elegant look to an outfit which is dull and not gorgeous enough to be worn. Moreover, it can enhance one's look and create a style, fashion sense of one's own. Scarves signify a sense of modesty and so some religions ask their women folk to cover their head with this apparel to pay homage to their holy text.
Mostly people relate the use of scarves with old ladies who in order to protect their hair from the blowing air or bad weather covers their head with scarves. However, these days' scarves are worn by both the men and women to justify a sense of style and fashion. School children often face discrimination as they wear scarves in school which is not in conformity with the norms of the school and their religious faith is not paid regard to if they avoid wearing scarves.
